Vlinder Myanmar Blue Carbon project

Investing in mangrove reforestation

Project at a glance

Reforestation and restoration of degraded mangrove coastal areas in Myanmar

  • 3,500 hectares of mangrove forest to be restored
  • 7,000,000 trees to be planted
  • 4,507,629 verified carbon credits* (50% is shared with the project’s impact partner Worldview International Foundation NGO and the local communities)
  • Protect people from extreme weather, tsunami and flooding
  • Improve soil quality for farming, local people use their leaves for food and medicine
  • Mangrove roots support marine life and corals

* May vary depending on the actual verified biomass growth

Myanmar is a perfect place for mangroves

Climate change is the key risk

Both scientists and the business community see climate change as one of the most significant threats: Researchers show that we are close to crossing several climate 'tipping points' which could accelerate global warming, global business made climate change the key topic of Davos 2020.

For the first time, we are forced to consider the real risk of destabilizing the entire planet.

Johan Rockström, climate impact scholar

Why mangroves?

Mangrove habitats act as a carbon sink: They may sequester up to 150 tonnes of carbon per hectare a year, which is much more than an equivalent area of terrestrial forests.

  • Climate superheroes - sequester up to five times more CO2 than other types of forest
  • Guardians of the shore - prevent soil erosion
  • Biodiversity refuge - provide vital habitat for animals and birds
  • Protect people from extreme weather, tsunami and flooding
  • Improve soil quality for farming, local people use their leaves for food and medicine
  • Mangrove roots support marine life and corals

Despite their importance, mangroves are disappearing at a global loss rate of 1–2% per year, and the loss rate reached 35% during the last 20 years.

Biodiversity benefits of the project

  • Marine life and coral reefs
  • Tropical birds
  • Crocodiles
  • White elephants

Mangrove habitats are biodiverse habitats of great ecological significance. Mangrove ecosystems serve as nurseries for fish and other aquatic organisms. Mangrove roots act as a filtration system and capture silt preventing siltation in seagrass meadows and on coral reefs.

Social impact of the project

The project will improve livelihoods and reduce poverty among the country’s vulnerable coastal communities by introducing a number of interventions such as sustainable crabbing and shrimp farms as well as other income generating activities such as production of natural dyes from mangroves.

  • Providing food security and food diversity for the local population
  • Value-added livelihoods
  • Women are >50% of the project’s local staff
  • Protection from extreme weather events
  • New revenue streams
  • Community education and upskilling

Carbon credits verification

A carbon credit is a tradable certificate representing the right to emit 1 tonne of carbon dioxide or the equivalent amount of a different greenhouse gas.
In voluntary markets, projects that reduce carbon emissions apply to receive carbon credits: They can register with one of several carbon offset standards, get certified and receive carbon credits.
We apply to Verra, the world’s most trusted and popular verification standard, to perform independent carbon monitoring and validation audits using their methodology. Additionally, we will develop and use our own AI-based methodology to monitor the project and calculate the estimated amount of carbon sequestered.
Pre-approval for the current project started in January 2020. Vlinder Myanmar Blue Carbon project is part of a larger project currently registered at the Verra website under #2088.
You can invest in carbon credits: The demand is constantly growing. Or you may use carbon credits to offset your footprint and get an offset certificate from the official carbon credits registry.

Tokenization

The Vlinder Myanmar Blue Carbon Token (VMBC) secures the investors rights to receive carbon credits dividends from participating in Vlinder Myanmar Blue Carbon project. Dividends are paid through the Vlinder Blue Carbon Afforestation Token (BLUECO2). Each Vlinder Blue Carbon Afforestation Token (BLUECO2) entitles the holder to the “offset-on-demand” service to retire verified carbon credits equivalent to 1 tonne of CO2 emission.

Risks disclosure

  • Sovereign: land tenure uncertainty, corruption, change of power
  • Social: local community unrest, military conflict
  • Natural: predation by crabs, pests and extreme weather events
  • Financial: carbon price fluctuation
  • Technological: risks associated with blockchain uptake

Robust legal frameworks and safeguarding measures have been put in place both by Worldview International Foundation and Vlinder to minimise the risks. The detailed risk assessment has been carried out and approved by Verra. Vlinder risk matrix is available upon request.
